Look, I'm on a podium! This is my first time on a legit podium.
I was the 2nd woman in the 5 mile trail run.
Look, so is C! She was 4th in her AG in the 10 mile trail run. [Look how nice the podiums look when they are all filled out b/c the runners haven't left!]
Her husband (not a blog follower so I won't plaster his face all over this shiny blog!) was 3rd in his AG in the 10-miler. We cleaned up!
Here is our glassware. Also exciting was that K (the husband) won an ipod shuffle. The whole race and post-race awards/prizes were pretty sweet. Awards 5 deep? Ipods and a $100 bill giveaway and more??
C told me about this trail race and THANK YOU SO MUCH. The race was sic. There were stream crossings (nowhere to go but through...everyone had wet feet). There were danger signs at 5-6 locations. Crazy mud including steep muddy climbs and descents.
The race is composed of either 1 or 2 loops of a 5 mile course. I started at a brisk pace (no warm-up except for a few short jogs to make sure my shoelaces were tied an appropriate tightness :) and immediately started picking off women. The problem was that I had no idea who was in the 5 mile and 10 mile races respectively. I basically chased every woman, assuming that if they were ahead of me they were 5 milers. Um, no. Among other 10 milers ahead of me, I killed myself chasing down one woman and passed her with 50 yards to go-and she started cheering me on just as she veered to the left to do another loop. I thought she was being a bit enthusiastic about getting passed near the end!! It's safe to say there was some talent out there!
The course was just really really fun while also kicking my butt. I'm glad the 5 and 10 mile fields were mixed so there were more women on the course. I never get particularly motivated chasing down men so this pulled me to a painful and good time (46:XX). When I finished they told me I was the second woman (It looks like the first place woman beat me by about 4 minutes. I'd just like to reiterate...4 minutes. Whole minutes.) and asked if I was okay (I was really hurting and it showed). I said I was fine but could the volunteer please pull the bottom of my number off for me b/c I really could not deal w/ it at that moment!
I stretched for a bit, cheered for a bit, got some water, and did what I'm calling a mile cool-down (not really a mile). I wanted to run 6 miles today as part of my training for my 10 mile race so I shuffled along for 8-9 minutes or so and called it a day. I grabbed my camera and took some pics of K and C finishing their 10 miles. We were supposed to have thunderstorms but didn't and it was just a beautiful day to be outside.
Here is C and I with our bling.
A final humorous note was that the announcer didn't quite think my sign-up info was correct and that I was really from Massachusetts. As I was getting my award he said my town and then said...in...um, Maryland? Nope, Massachusetts baby!
