I RAN A SUB-20 5K! It's been a goal of mine for about 4 years now.
The course was an out and back, with the first half downhill and the return up-hill. I loved it. I always start fast and the downhill start allowed me to start very fast. Love.
The race started a 10K about three minutes before the 5K but the 10K was on the opposite side of the road and I had no problems with crowding. I was also able to pass the middle school age guys (in the 5K) who always line up on the starting line of races like these by about a mile in as well. :) On the return some of the women in the back of the 10K, traveling in the opposite direction as me, were cheering for me and that felt really nice. J4 was on the course as well getting his run in (training, not racing) and being a super cheerer. The day was great (unseasonably cool DC running weather) and I felt strong the whole way to my 19:40.
I led the women's race wire to wire and I got a giant trophy and I was briefly interviewed by a local running mag. That was certainly a running first for me!
So now I have achieved all of my running goals. I BQd in 2010. I ran sub-20 today. I have no running races on the calendar except for Boston 2014 (if my 3:29 is good enough to get in). I am not sure what to do with myself. I told J4, I'm all set now. I'm a go for babies! Hehe. Not in the near future. But I feel great I can go into it-at some point-knowing that I've achieved what I set out to do in my running life. So I guess...I will spend the rest of the year just piling on the miles (I am loving running right now) and seeing how fast I can get.
In other news, yesterday J4 and I hiked Old Rag in Shenandoah National Park and it was one of the best hikes I've ever done. I love Virginia!
